The idea of inserting a menstrual cup can seem very challenging to some people—especially if you have never used an internal period product before. Not to worry, insertion is a simple process. Here’s how to insert a menstrual cup:
First, Wash Your Hands
It goes without saying that whenever you use any internal products, for periods or otherwise, washing your hands is important. Ensure that you wash your hands before inserting or removing your Ivy Cup.
Next, Relax
If you are all tense and anxious about using your menstrual cup, insertion might be more confusing for you. Stress and tension can cause your muscles to tighten up and make insertion challenging. Ensure that you relax and breathe and you’ll figure it out pretty quickly.
There’s nothing to worry about – a menstrual cup will not harm you and your body is safe. Watch a few videos about menstrual cups and get the confidence boost you need to get it going!
Fold Your Ivy Cup
Now, to get things started, fold your menstrual cup before you insert it. There are quite a couple of folds that you can use, but we recommend these three for beginners.
Use your index finger to drag down one side of the rim of your cup inward towards the base.
C or U Fold
Press the sides of your cup together to flatten it. Fold the cup sideways in half.
Punch Down Fold
Use your index finger to drag down one side of the rim of your cup inward towards the base. This fold has the smallest point of insertion for easier insertion.
Triangle Fold
Flatten the sides of the cup and diagonally fold one side over to the other.

Get in a Comfortable Position
You’ll need to get in a comfortable position to insert your menstrual cup. You can either:
- Sit on the toilet
- Stand with one leg propped up on the bathtub, a chair, the toilet seat, or any other raised platform
- Squat
Figure Out Where It Goes
Start by gently separating your labia with your free hand (the one that isn’t holding your cup). This is usually your less dominant hand.
Insert
Hold the folded cup between your thumb and your pointing finger. Push the folded upper part into your vagina.
Tip: Don’t insert your cup straight up. Instead, insert the cup horizontally and towards your tailbone as the vagina is positioned at an angle.
Make Sure It’s Open
Depending on the fold you use, you’ll need to help your cup pop open. With the C or U fold and the Punch Down Fold, pinch the base of the cup to release the fold. With the triangle fold, use your pointer finger to push up the folded part of the cup.
To make sure it’s open, feel the sides of the cup to make sure there are no dents or folds. Tug on the stem of the cup gently – if there’s resistance, then the cup has formed a seal and you’re good to go!
All Done!
